Family First NZ is rubbishing claims by critics including Gareth Morgan that the New World ‘Little Shop’ promotion is harmful for kids, and says that kids should be allowed to be kids.
“Children love acting like their parents and pretending to be shopping, choosing and paying for real-life food, and figuring out how much it costs and how much money they have left. It’s no different to Monopoly and many other games,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.
“To try and bring it under the banner of the obesity and junk food campaign is flawed.”
“It’s interesting that these critics didn’t attack Countdown for their recent Dreamworks Heroes cards which it could be argued could lead to increased viewing time watching DVD’s and television and possibly result in obesity.”
“To say that it creates irresistible ‘pester power’ is wrong. Parents can simply say no in the same way they say no to the chocolates and lollies on display, and the specials on ice cream and pizza.”
“The only ‘pester power’ going on is adults trying to politicise fun things for children. We should let kids be kids, and empower parents to be the gatekeepers of the food supply in their homes. That’s their job – not Gareth Morgan’s.”
