‘I abused my husband’

Anger masked the anxiety one woman felt for almost eight years, leading her to abuse her husband and almost ending the marriage.
Now she’s an advocate for an anger management model that got her life back on track.
The 41-year-old Albany woman says her concern “that things wouldn’t turn out right” saw her emotionally control her husband and step-daughter.
Finding other women are going through the same problems made her feel less “abnormal”.
Society does not recognise different types of abuse, only physical, she says.
But “subtle abuse” through words can be just as destructive, she says.
She hopes telling her story will encourage other women to seek help.
Gwendoline Cooney, programme manager for the course, says more women are getting involved.
“It’s good to see that they are OK about admitting to themselves that things may be getting out of control and they are taking steps to do something about it,” she says
