Police target patrons of underage prostitutes

Police in South Auckland have run a major operation to get underage prostitutes off the street. Girls as young as 13 have been selling themselves for sex, some for as little as $20, in order to buy alcohol. One teenage prostitute we met is just 17 years old. We won’t name her identity because her parents don’t know she’s a street worker. “I don’t do this for drugs, or anything like that,” she says. But she’s being pimped by her uncle. “There are some other fellows with some underage girls around here,” says her uncle. “They’re only hating on her because she’s getting most of the business.”

…In the past month, police have run a major operation in South Auckland in an attempt to rid the streets of underage prostitutes. They came across some horror stories. “There were some youths, kids, roughly 13 years of age, selling themselves for roughly $20 in order to afford alcohol,” says Sergeant Kit Gill. During the operation police took a number of underage sex workers into the care of Child, Youth and Family. “There are some unsavoury characters that turn up and start hitting on these poor girls,” says Constable Steve Downie. “We do get calls to go and help them out because they might have got assaulted or the guys not happy with the service they have performed, so they are taking their lives into their own hands.”
