Family First NZ is calling on the government to provide compensation to the family of Halatau Naitoko as a compassionate and appropriate response to exceptional circumstances.
“The killing of Halatau Naitoko was a tragic mistake by the police in exceptional circumstances, and as a result the family has suffered horrendous loss,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.
“It is one thing for the police to admit errors and make the necessary procedural changes, but financial compensation would back up that apology and go a small way to helping the family and the needs of a young daughter left without a father as a result of the ‘tragic outcome of a rare combination of events’ – according to the IPCA report.”
“The worse thing would be for this to be dragged through a long drawn out legal process where the only winners are lawyers,” says Mr McCoskrie.
