Information withheld puts children ‘at risk’ 7 Feb 2012
Kiwi children are continually being put at risk because of a lack of information-sharing between social agencies, a Hamilton community nurse says. The Well Child nurse, who declined to be named, told the Waikato Times that families would continue to receive “less than optimum support” and “children will continue to be at risk” if something didn’t change soon. “One might assume then, that all agencies work in partnership with one another to ensure our children are kept safe: not so, I’m afraid,” she said. “On several occasions I have contacted a particular social agency to find out important information, only to be told that they are unable to give that information because they are bound by the Privacy Act.” Her concerns come just weeks before submissions close for the Government’s Green Paper on vulnerable children.
