No new pokies says City Council

Southland Times 9 Nov 2011
The Invercargill City Council last night adopted a new gambling venue policy preventing any new establishments from having pokie machines, despite essentially being warned that such a policy could affect the chances of a new multimillion-dollar hotel being built in the city. The ILT Foundation was one of 42 submitters to the council’s proposed gambling venues policy hearing, held at the council headquarters yesterday. The vast majority of the submitters were in favour of the council’s draft policy, which was formally adopted about 9pm. The “sinking lid” policy means no new pokie venues or pokie machines will be allowed in the city, though the current machines can stay. The ILT Foundation – which operates 181 of the 309 pokie machines in Invercargill and returns its pokie profits to the community in the form of grants – expressed its concerns in its submission to the council.
