Earthquake-hit brothel owners could be barred from some areas of Christchurch after city councillors voted to investigate a possible bylaw restricting brothel locations. Council staff will report back on the options for a signage and locations bylaw in February in response to fears that large quake-hit brothels could relocate to the suburbs. Council strong-communities programme manager Alan Bywater said there was “some nervousness” within the city council that the existing bylaw had lapsed in July and not been replaced.
Councillor Sue Wells said there was a risk that brothels could relocate to suburban areas and cause problems for residents. “Given the damage to many of the buildings [housing brothels], my worry is that places that up until now haven’t been attractive locations may become that,” she said.
