Bedtime story awakens controversy

ONE News 13 July 2011

A controversial top-selling book overseas has gone on sale today in New Zealand. Go the F*** to Sleep has been an internet sensation but Family First thinks it’s disgusting and have tried to have it banned. The book, for parents, looks like a normal nursery rhyme book and sounds like a lullaby but in reality it is a bedtime story unlike any other. It was written by Adam Mansbach as a spoof, based on the author’s experience as a dad. He said he believes New Zealanders have a very good sense of humour and that is the key ingredient for enjoying the book. But Family First thinks it goes too far in the use of language. “It’s got foul language, it’s quite strong themes…but our major concern is that…it’s masqueraded as a child’s book,” director Bob McCoskrie said.
