Lobby group Family First believes Labour’s call for a Minister of Children is well-intentioned, but flawed, because it fails to recognise the role of parents. It says a Minister of Families would be better placed to replace the Families and Children’s Commissions. National director Bob McCoskrie says governments have tinkered with Families Commissions and a Children’s Commissioner. He says both have been unable to, or have failed to, fully represent the concerns and needs of families. Mr McCoskrie says Labour’s call for a Minister of Children fails to acknowledge that families and children are not mutually exclusive. He says the best way to support children is to make sure that the families raising them are strong, stable, and supported.
