A Timaru mother is upset at the short notice given to parents about a meeting for year 8 schoolgirls to discuss the HPV vaccination. After researching Gardasil two years ago, Julie Smith became so concerned about the vaccine used to immunise girls against the human papillomavirus that she set up a website, offtheradar.co.nz. The virus has been linked to cervical cancer. Mrs Smith was concerned yesterday when her daughter brought home a letter from Grantlea Downs School informing parents that year 8 girls today would be having a meeting with the public health nurse about the vaccine. “It is a decision that should be made by adults not 12-year-old girls. At the very least parents should have been invited to attend the meeting to hear what information is being given to their children,” Mrs Smith said.
