‘Mondayising’ Public Holidays Good for Families

Family First NZ is supporting Labour’s proposed law to “mondayise” Waitangi Day and Anzac Day.

“Workers, and therefore families, have missed out on public holidays last year and will again this year. This ultimately impacts on family time when we stop as a nation and enjoy a public holiday,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.

“Poll after poll has shown that both parents and children want to spend more time together doing family things like picnics and trips. However, this is becoming increasingly difficult as a number of industries such as Retail and Service are required to work almost every day of the year.”

“Public holidays are traditions. They create rituals for families based on celebrating together, reconnecting, and making memories.”

A 2004 International Labour Organisation (ILO) report found that New Zealanders work longer than any other nationality, apart from the Japanese.

“We need to get the work / life balance correct for the sake of families. Employers already budget for statutory holidays. In fact, they have benefited very well last year and this year. This proposed law change would simply ensure the status quo,” says Mr McCoskrie

“We support the call for guaranteed days OFF – One For Families.”
