Pokie fight goes to the High Court

The Nelson Mail 18/09/2010
The High Court has been asked to rule on the legality of the Nelson City Council’s new gambling policy, which allows poker machines in proximity to kindergartens, schools and playgrounds. The policy, changed after submissions from poker machine proponents wanting them in a Victory Square bar, overturned an earlier rule blocking pokies within 100 metres of kindergartens, schools and playgrounds. One of the two Nelson lawyers working with the pokie opponents, Luke Acland of Bamford Law, said the application was filed in the High Court and served on the council yesterday. It was made by the new incorporated society set up by the group this week, the Nelson Gambling Task Force.
