A crackdown on gambling is being promised by the Maori Party after MP Te Ururoa Flavell had a bill pulled from Parliament’s ballot. The proposed law would allow communities to reduce or eliminate pokie machines, introduce player tracking and pre-commitment cards and ensure pokie profits are put back into tackling gambling harm. Mr Flavell says gambling harm destroys families, threatens relationships and undermines community wellbeing. He’s promising to apply the same passion to the issue that his party has to tobacco.
