Parents of offending youths may end up in court and ordered to complete education programmes if a scheme being pushed by a Christchurch MP is introduced. National’s Nicky Wagner hopes her party’s proposed “parenting education orders” will help cut rates of youth crime in Canterbury.Figures revealed nearly 15,000 people under 15 years had been apprehended by Canterbury police in the past five years. Wagner said the proposed programme, based on a British initiative, aimed to increase parental responsibility for youth offending.”Parents should know where their kids are at all times, and they don’t – that’s the problem.” Parents of children who offended would appear in court and be ordered to attend parenting courses, teaching them how to better manage their children. Further orders, including counselling or guidance, could be provided under the scheme, she said.
