Alarm at rising family violence

The Dominion Post 30 Jan 07
More than 24,000 battered women and children fled to New Zealand’s 50 safe houses in a year that saw a record number of victims needing emergency help. Agencies say a “shocking” Christmas left safe houses overflowing after a year that had already seen 9000 more cases than the previous one. Women’s Refuge figures for the year to June show 24,029 women and children fled to safe houses, compared to 15,342 the previous year.
