Hot cross buns feeding obesity epidemic

Hot cross buns now come with a health warning from dieticians concerned that the seasonal treat is feeding the obesity epidemic. In its latest magazine, Diabetes New Zealand warned that hot cross buns are equivalent to two to three slices of bread. It advised readers to chose a smaller bun or just eat half a bun.The Press newspaper reported today that the spicy fruit buns were now available for a much longer period, came in six packs – sometimes with two extra free – and sometimes had chocolate chips in them. Public health nutritionist Bronwen King said the buns were not a bad thing in themselves but she recommended against eating them “dripping in butter”.
