Police are worried youth gangs are flexing their muscles after a spike in violent crime around Christchurch. Three teenagers have been charged with attacking Christ church builder Gary Snook, 45, last week. Snook was beaten and left in a pool of blood on a footpath just minutes from his home in Mairehau.  In another case of street violence, a Christchurch man in his 60s suffered a broken rib and a punctured lung at the hands of a gang of youths last week. Police figures show 1483 youth between 10 and 20 were apprehen ded for violent crimes during the year ending June 30. There were 1230 for the previous 12-month period.

Antisocial youth top crime list

Antisocial behaviour by young people and thefts from cars are the biggest crime issues currently facing the North Shore says the new police district commander. At a media conference on Thursday he said current crime issues on the North Shore involve youth disorder in the East Coast Bays and boy racers. “The majority (of residents) aren’t assaulted or burgled but antisocial behaviour is a real issue.”
