Free fruit and veg for low income families

Evening Standard UK 25 Nov 06
Pregnant women and toddlers from low income families are to get free fruit and vegetables under a Government scheme starting next week. The Healthy Start programme replaces the Welfare Food Scheme, set up during the Second World War to protect the health of children during rationing. Under the new scheme, parents will receive vouchers which can be used to buy fruit and vegetables as well as milk and formula for babies, the Department of Health said.
