Teachers with criminal past can’t be named

Dominion Post 25 Oct 06
The Government has admitted it is powerless to intervene after it was revealed that teachers with a history of drugs, violence and sex offences had been allowed back into the classroom. Education Minister Steve Maharey, who yesterday met the council for an explanation of 13 cases of teacher misconduct, said the Privacy Act prevented him from naming the people concerned. He was not able to interfere with decisions made by the council, “and (those decisions) cannot, of course, be changed by the council once they are made”.
