Explosion in serious youth violence

Serious youth violence has rocketed by 27 per cent since 1996, a Justice Ministry report shows. Grievous and serious assaults by 14 to 16-year-olds jumped 54 per cent to 1324 and aggravated robbery 57 per cent, to 290.During the same period, from 1996 to 2005, total crime committed by youths remained static at about 31,000 recorded offences according to the report titled Conviction and Sentencing of Offenders in New Zealand. The report also shows the number of prosecutions had risen while the number of resolutions in family group conferences has dropped.
