Booze bill down to the wire

Dominion Post 21 Oct 06
MPs face weeks of intense lobbying on whether to return the drinking age to 20 as a conscience vote looks likely to go down to the wire. A parliamentary committee gave the go-ahead yesterday for a bill that would reverse the 1999 decision to lower the drinking age to 18.Opponents of that decision say it has led to more youth drinking and alcohol-related harm, but supporters say owning up to our binge drinking culture – not raising the drinking age – is the solution.
