$6.4m to tackle depression

Former All Black John Kirwan will feature in television and radio advertisements as part of a $6.4 million campaign to tackle depression. Associate Health Minister Jim Anderton yesterday launched a three-year National Depression Initiative aimed at raising awareness of depression among sufferers and their families and encouraging people to seek treatment.

One in five New Zealanders and nearly one in three Maori will suffer a mental health disorder in any one year, a major new survey says. The $8 million survey of 13,000 New Zealanders, released by Health Minister Pete Hodgson yesterday, concluded nearly half of all New Zealanders would suffer mental illness at some point in their lives.
