Outrageous Fortune Apology Patronising and Hypocritical
Family First Media Release 15 October 2010
Family First NZ is labeling an apology from TV3 regarding yet another offensive episode of Outrageous Fortune as patronising and hypocritical.

“TV3’s apology for using the “c” word is completely hypocritical when the rest of the show is consistently saturated with offensive language and sexual themes,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ. “In just the first 10 minutes of the latest episode shown on free to air television between 8.30 and 8.40pm, there were 8 uses of the ‘f’ word, 5 uses of ‘sh*t’ and ‘p*ss”, and an offensive sexual reference.”

“For TV3 to cry crocodile tears over just one of many offensive words is pathetic. Their apology is also patronising as they don’t apologise for scripting, acting, and broadcasting the offensive material, but simply apologise if a viewer is offended.”

“It is a sad state of affairs when our broadcasters are so lax to allow that type of offensive material through. They blame it on human error – is that the error of the actor voicing it or the script writer including it? It is also significant that the dvd versions of the shows are R16 and labelled ‘Contains violence, offensive language, drug use and sex scenes.’

Family First NZ will be laying a formal complaint with the Broadcasting Standards Authority, and will also be writing to NZ On Air to question their use of taxpayer funding for offensive programmes, and to the Minister of Broadcasting.

“NZ taxpayers have funded this programme to the tune of more than $48m – which is just as offensive as the content of the programme itself,” says Mr McCoskrie.
